Just in time for
the holy daze, my sweetie pie (Jenschka) and I ad libbed a mini
X-mas EPall recorded off-the-cuff into my computer, Saturday
Dec. 21, 2002. Due to the spontaneous nature of this recording,
there are a couple digital explosions (primarily on "White
Christmas"), but there's some fun stuff ('specially "Happy
Birthday Jesus" and "Jingle Bells")!
If you're offended
by any of the above, please continue to pray for us.

UPLOAD:
K. I finally revamped
the AUDIO UPLOAD page! I grouped
each artist by genre and created an individual page for each player,
where songs can be played, bios can be read, photos can be seen,
and feedback/critiques can be posted. This should make it much easier
for people interested in hearing some new stuff to zero in on the
styles they're seeking on the 'Net.
So you can get
a glimpse of this page's new setup, check out the offerings from
these new artists, all of which posted their material over the course
of the past month:
All totaled, we
got 26 different artists, posting their original stuffin 10
categories (Avant-Rock, Singer/Songwriter, Guitar Rock, Metal, Ambient,
Techno, Hip-Hop, Solo Acoustic Guitar, Solo Electric Guitar, and
Shred)! So, if you feel you got the goods in any of these genres,
consider giving AUDIO UPLOAD a go...

HaPpY
BiRtHdAy Jeff Buckley!!:
Believe it or
not, it's been 5 1/2 years since the passing of one of the greatest
guitar-playing vocalists ever to roam the face of this earth. Well,
today's the man's birthdayso blast your Buckley birthday blessing
skyward! Honor his memory by cranking his impassioned songs for
all to hear! For this very reason, much of the "news"
below relates directly to his greatness. Let's give it a go...
The
Jeff Buckley WebRing:
For some reason
the original owner of what's generally regarded as the most-traveled,
content-rich Jeff Buckley WebRing on the 'Net opted to pass the
torch to someone else. Guess who inherited it? Kinda surprised,
but this cat's definitely jazzed about that! So... If you want to
engage in a serious exploration of 39 totally different, very informative
Jeff Buckley sites, consider surfing this ring.
You'll see how diverse his fan base truly is, and learn loads in
the process. (Also note that there are *no* non-functioning links
within this entire ringit's
100% navigatable.)
Meanwhile, if *you* have a Buckley-related site of your own, consider
sharing it with the numerous Buckley fans that regularly surf this
ring. There's no fee. All you gotta do is add the Ring's HTML or
JavaScript coding to your page.
Jeff
Buckley Official Guitar TAB Songbook:
Almost two years
ago, various classic cuts from Jeff Buckley's Grace
("Dream Brother," "Eternal Life," "Grace,"
"Last Goodbye," "Mojo Pin," "So Real"),
Sketches
("Everybody Here Wants You," "I Know We Could Be
So Happy, Baby," "Jewel Box," "Opened Once,"
"Vancouver"), and Mystery
White Boy ("I Woke Up in a Strange Place," "What
Will You Say?") albums were transcribed (transcriptions actually
edited by yours truly!), with the eventual goal of publishing them
in the form of an official songbook. Well, that day's finally arrived!
Follow the link below, if you'd like to read more, and/or snag this
one-of-a-kind guitar TAB offering. It comes complete with TAB, standard
notation, and all the vocals too:
Jeff
Buckley Chord-Style Lesson (PSYCHO LICKS):
Keeping with the
spirit of this month's update, I've added a special
lesson to this site's PSYCHO LICKS
page. It's a tutorial on how to utilize a specific type of chord
voicing Jeff Buckley uses in songs like "Everybody Here Wants
You," among others.

FYI, Frusciante
freaks are gonna FLIP when they see this lesson!!! I can't believe
how awesome this turned out. And it's not some lame interview/lesson
on how to learn to play RHCP songs. It's geared towards *really*
learning how to improvise rhythm guitar parts, using music theory
and knowledge of notes on the guitar fretboard. If you were ever
curious to find out just how much Froosh knows in the way of theory
and the like, as well as how it enhances his overall creativity,
THIS is the lesson for you!!
Here are some
sample audio clips of the figures used in the lesson, actually played
on G1's web site by li'l 'ol me (for whatever that's worth).
There are 27 FIGURES TOTAL!!
There are also
PDFs of parts of this story on the RED

Figured I'd tip
off any ska pickers out there to a cool thing FenderPlayersClub.com
did with my book, Ska Guitar. They made available a big chunk
of one of that book's chapter's, available for download in PDF format.
Check it out, if you feel like skankin':

totally spontaneous (and manipulated after the fact) ditty from
Shawn Patterson (and his li'l daughter) called "Blah86Degrees,"
a new excerpt from Guvernment Cheese ("Overload"),
a killer cut from Doug Mackay ("I

Paul Kenyon ("Pain

learned to date (plus some new ones) are grafted over a 12-bar jazz-blues.

your jazz-pluckin' pleasure!

K.
This one definitely falls in the WTF? category!
It's a little piece of Elton John's Blue
Eyes, recorded live on 25 September, 2002. Nothin' spatial...
The bit here is only the outro chorus of the song (the last minute's
worth). My mini-disc player died midway through (the whole 1st half
SUCKED anyway...couldn't hear myself AT ALL), so I'm using my girlfriend's
mono cassette version (stereo-ized after the fact) for this little
excerpt. Lots of tape jitter... Hopefully I can get a better, complete
version of it recorded soon, 'cause I think the chords I was using
are kinda cool...

PSYCHO
LICKS:
Still bonkers
for jazz basslines? For your plucking pleasure, I just added Part
3 of our four-part Walking
Basslines Bonanza lesson to the PSYCHO
LICKS area of this site! In this installment, we'll focus on
using 4ths voicings as a means of accessing chordal sounds from
notes that don't fall conveniently within the user-friendly 1-3-5-b7
arpeggio of a dominant 7th chord. For instance, this means you won't
be limited to using only inversions of the G7 chordshapes
which can be conveniently popped after your bassline
walks into either a G(1), B(3), D(5), or F(b7)in your accompaniment.
Now you can pop chords off of other notes from
the G Mixolydian scale (G-A-B-C-D-E-F)specifically, A (2nd/9th),
C (4th/11th), and E (6th/13th). If this sounds confusing, just check
out the lesson! I think I explained it better there... :)

For what it's
worth, I'm pretty darned proud of the solo geetar arranging
lesson in that issue. Fun little figures for playing solo blues,
solo acoustic pick-style, Hendrix-esque (à la Little
Wing) solo stuff, and jazz chord melody. If you're curious,
here are what the examples (accompanied by detailed text/transcriptions
in the actual mag) sound like:
I had to compose
the fake tunes for the lead sheet, free of any preconceived
guitar part, then arrange 'em for solo geetar. It was kinda hard!
Oh yeah! The piece

of last month's four-part Walking
Basslines Bonanza lesson to the PSYCHO

three areas: Basic Dominant 7th inversions, Mixolydian scale fingerings
(along the 6th string), and voice-leading your lines to faciliate
your chord pops. Check it out!!
Also, I found
a couple old lessons I did with KoRn's James Munky Shaffer
and Brian Head Welch for Guitar World magazine
a few eons ago. (The interview/lessons were conducted at NRG Studios,
late March '98 while the band was recording their breakthrough album,
Follow the Leader.) Two of the six (or seven?) lessons I
did with them are still on their servers: January
1999 and February
1999. FYI, I put links to these lessons near the bottom of the

Intimate
Audio's One-Year Anniversary:
Holy hambone!
Can you believe this li'l site has now officially existed for a
full year?! 'Tis true! In that time, this little bugger's grown
to include loads of featuresfrom a place to upload MP3s of
your own songs (AUDIO UPLOAD) for
the enjoyment/feedback of other audiophiles (MESSAGE
BOARD), or scare up some free guitar licks (PSYCHO
LICKS), all the while monitoring your hands' health (HAND
JOB)! Or
maybe you
wanna read some tributes to some of the biggest musical inspirations
for the creation of this sitelike Brian Wilson, Jeff Buckley,
and Miles Davis (TRIBUTES)and/or
follow links to more information about their musical legacy? Perhaps
you'd prefer to surf through a zillion rock-solid guitar/independent
music links (LINKS), or check out some
of the site host's personal pals' pages (DALE'S
PICKIN' PALS)? (Note: There are also numerous links to artists'
"official" pages on this site's INTERVIEW
ARCHIVE page.) Speaking of "interviews"... Maybe you'd
dig reading some of the exclusive interview/lessonsconducted
with major-league, pro pickersincluded on this site?
Here, you'll find features conducted with Paul
Gilbert, Yngwie Malmsteen,
Joe Satriani, and George
Lynchinterview/lessons (w/TABs & MP3s) all unavailable
elsewhere, courtesy of Guitar One magazine! Or blow your
mind trying to get inside Brian Wison's head in the BRIAN
WILSON INTERVIEW Bassics magazine kindly permitted us
to include here! Finally, if all else fails, at least you know you
can find solace/diversion in the weirdness confined to the AUDIO
ODDITIES page! 'Course, that merely scratches the surface of
this site's contents; do some 'splorin', and you're bound to discover
something new each visit. (Especially since this site's constantly
updatedoftentimes in "unreported" increments!) (If
you're curious, the changes that have occurred on this site since
its inception can be accessed via the 2001
NEWS ARCHIVE.)
Not trying to
be a boastful bozo here, but the traffic to this site has also grown
in leaps and bounds over this past year. In the early days, the
site's weekly stats reported an average of 250 unique visitors
per week. Not too shabby, considering awareness of this site's
existence was purely word-of-mouth. (The site was not yet "linked
to" by any outside sites, and no submissions to search engines
had occurred.) Well, as previously reported (April 14, 2002), that
figure blasted up to 1,000+ unique visitors per week between
April 7-13, 2002! Amazingly, the growth didn't stop there. During
the first week of July, for whatever reason (most likely via a link
from Line
6's GuitarPort Online), traffic climbed to a shocking 1882
unique visitors per week!! What's that mean? It means thatat
the very leastif you wanna promote a tune or two of yours,
and you feel like goin' the AUDIO UPLOAD
route, a pretty good-sized amount of folks might find their way
over there... It also means, among other things, the chances of
finding a pal or two on this site's MESSAGE
BOARD or CHAT
ROOM are somewhat promising!
But wait!! We
ain't done braggin' yet!!! The efforts this site has made to help
expose independent artists' music (and support Do-It-Yourself-ers,
in general) has, to our shock and amazement, recently netted Intimate
Audio an "Indie" award:
"We
at 'The
Artist Zone,' and 'Support
the Indies Webring' proudly present Intimate
Audio with an indies award
banner. We feel that Intimate Audio is a Strong Indie Supporter
as well as a fine musician and person. Congratulations Intimate
Audio! And thank you for all your support to the Indie Artists!"
|
So... THANKS!!!
To all who've visited and (hopefully) benefited somehow from this
site, thanks for checking in so often!! It IS appreciated!! And,
rest assured, more new featuresand loads o' audio/instructional
freebieswill be making an appearance in the coming year! Yeeee
haw!

LICKS:
Since there hasn't
been much "jazz" vocabulary stuff on Intimate Audio's
PSYCHO LICKS lessons page, I've
just added the first of four installments of a "Walking
Basslines Bonanza" lesson to this site! All of the four
installments are geared towards developing walking basslines and
using them in conjunction with chordsan often puzzling aspect
of jazz guitar accompaniment (or solo jazz guitar)to outline
a G blues. Hopefully these four installments will help you become
more technically adept at executing these types of complex figures,
as well as provide a deeper understanding of how to improvise with
them. Enjoy!

Just wanted to

RECORDINGS
(Dale Boots):
Why
not? I figured, with all the AUDIO UPLOAD activity, I'd throw down
another ancient bootleg of live yodeling/picking action to the Dale
Boots portion of this site's RECORDINGS
page! This latest addition is a live version (from a wedding) of
me playing "Can
You Feel the Love Tonight" on a clean-tone Strat, while
attempting to yodel like Elton John. The recording dates back to
March 1995! Doesn't really sound like "me" now, but WTF?
At the very least, check it out for the purty cool "echo repeat"
delay thing I did at the end of the song. :)

"DATING"
JEFF BUCKLEY'S LES PAUL:
(First of all,
let me start by saying I'm not trying to "take credit"
for diddley doodle! I just think that, given the fact that a healthy
percentage of this site's content is dedicated to and inspired by
Jeff Buckley, that some people will be interested in reading about
how some of this kind of stuff goes down. Read on...)
~***~
On 21 May, 2002,
Guitar One Contributing Writer, Bob Keelaghan, received the
following query from the Estate of Jeff Buckley, visa-vis
Fun Palace Entertainment:
--------------------------------
"The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (Jackie Clary) has decided
to display Jeff Buckley related items, including his Gibson Les
Paul guitar. We know Jeff purchased the guitar in 1995 in a Wisconsin
state guitar shop, but without locating the receipt, we are unable
to date the guitar. The guitar has the following serial # 00 XXX
XXX [Note: I omitted the digits, for security purposesD.T.].
Now we know the first couple digits usually indicate the year of
manufacture, but in this case, it couldn't be 2000. Could you shed
any light for us on this important matter? Thanks so much for your
best estimate..."
--------------------------------
The above query
was then forwarded by Bob to Guitar One's Editor In-Chief,
Troy Nelson. Troy, knowing I was a full-blown Jeff Buckley lunatic,
put me on the case!!!
First of all,
as you'll soon see, "dating" Gibson guitars simply by
their serial number is not the easiest of tasks. The date itself
is not even remotely hinted at in the serial number; the number
itself contains digits that are "code" for a certain year.
After doing some digging, I came across an official "Gibson
Les Paul" manual that put me on the proper path. Here's what
I then sent to the parties that be:
--------------------------------
"I reckon
that baby's a 1976. Here's the scoop, straight from an official
'Gibson Les Paul dating/serial#' manual:
During the
period from 1975-1977 Gibson used a transfer that had eight digit
numbers, the first two indicate the year, 99=1975, 00=1976 and 06=1977,
the following six digits are in the 100000 to 200000 range. MADE
IN USA were also included on the transfer and some models had LIMITED
EDITION also applied. A few bolt on neck instruments had a date
ink stamped on the heel area.
That's it!!!
(Could it've been any more confusing?)"
--------------------------------
The
cool thing? After all was said and done, Guitar One got this
nice response back from the Estate of Jeff Buckley, visa-vis
Fun Palace Entertainment:
--------------------------------
"Dear
Dale, Troy and Bob,
I've just reached
Jeff Buckley's mother Mary Guibert, and she, along with Fun Palace
Entertainment, want to thank you for delivering key information
to us just last week. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will be displaying
Jeff Buckley's Les Paul guitar and other memorabilia and needed
this information for the information plaque. Along with Mrs. Guibert,
I will be traveling to Cleveland on June 15th for the unveiling
(I'll send pictures if you want), and all your efforts will certainly
be conveyed to those organizing the event. Thanks again for your
expertise and for publishing the fine Guitar
One Magazine."
--------------------------------
Pretty
cool, eh? Now if I could just get to Cleveland to eyeball that axe
up close...
[Crazy
"name-dropping" trivia nugget: Which of Jeff Buckley's
guitars did your silly site host actually get to touch? Answer:
Jeff's famed Rickenbacker electric 12-string!! How? When I interviewed
Chris Cornell and Alain Johannes back in 1999 at the place where
Euphoria Morning was recorded (Johannes' house), I was taken
to a room where Cornell's guitars were racked up. After Jeff Buckley's
passing, as a gift (I believe for his "quality control"
work for Buckley's Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk posthumous
release), Jeff's mother gave Chris Cornell the aforementioned axe.
The guitar was sitting right there in front of me! To my amazement,
I was even offered a chance to play it!! Alas, because I'm such
a DORK, I freaked out and only allowed myself to touch it... D'OH!
I truly am an embarassment! ;)]

Many thanks for
lending your eyelobes and earballs to this place over this past
year!! See ya 'round!

PSYCHO
LICKS:
In an effort to
redeem myself for my lame-assed performance of the blazing
blues lick I uploaded a couple months ago (see/hear LICK#16),
for my newest addition to PSYCHO LICKS,
I'm serving up a tasty two-bar phrase worthy of inclusion in any
modern blues scenario. Check it out! (It's short...and kinda sweet!)
LINE
6:
In case anybody
was wondering, one of the reasons it's taken me so freakin' long
to update the lessons page of this site is.... I've
been doing lessons for Line
6's GuitarPort Online in my off-hours!! I don't know if any
of them are up yet though, 'cause I can't even view them (you need
a PC, the GuitarPort, and I believe a subscription)!! But if you
have GuitarPort, and check their lessons out, please let me know
what you think! I did one on ska and another on heavy,
detuned riffing (that one's cool!!!).
AUDIO
UPLOAD:
Just got two brand-spankin'
new tunes uploaded to the AUDIO UPLOAD
page, coming by way of George Scottie Tee White from
Lake Charles, Louisiana. The first song is called I
Wish I Could Remember, and in the artist's own words,
it's about a guy that is drinking his true love out of his
mind, but can't remember who he is drinking to forget. He
also uploaded a track called Mama
Loves the Roses (a song written about his mother, and
a big hit for Scottie Tee locally), as well as a snippet from Little
Cajun Queen (must be downloaded via ftp from the ftp
site). I'll check and see if he has a website, so y'all can
hear/read more about Scottie Tee!
RECORDINGS
(Dale Boots):
A
couple days ago, on the 5th anniversary of Jeff Buckley's passing
(d. 29 May, 1997), I played at a little event at Los Angeles City
College. The song I did, called Twisted,
was recorded on mini-disc. For fun, I'm adding it to the ultra-raw
Dale Boots portion
of this site's RECORDINGS page. I
also added the spoken intro I did, dedicating the song to Jeff Buckley,
and saying some semi funny stuff. Check it out and have a laugh!!

PSYCHO
LICKS:
Way back in the
Summer/Fall of 1999, I interviewed four of rock guitar's gnarliest
pickersGeorge Lynch, Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert, and Joe
Satrianifor a series of monster features that ran in Guitar
One magazine. Each of these interviews featured a bonus
lesson, which we made available only on Guitar One's web
site. For a time, I had links to three of these (Gilbert, Malmsteen,
and Satch) on my PSYCHO LICKS page. However, around March of this
year, Guitar One removed them from their servers (*sniffle*).
The good news is, they've given me authorization to make them available
on this site (albeit, using my original hand-written
transcriptions and not-so-spiffy design)! In addition, I've also
been granted permission to post a George Lynch interview/lesson
that was once exclusive to Guitar One's web site (removed
from their servers some time in early 2000). Clicking the links
below will take you straight to all of the above:
You'll also find
loads of links that pertain to each artist at the bottom of these
features!
CHAT
ROOM:
For fun, I added
a CHAT
ROOM to this site. I'm still tweaking it (it totally works fine
though), and I won't be on it much for a spell, but feel free to
freak out over there. (NOTE: I still need to post a link to it at
a visible location on this site; for now, the only place to access
it will be through this
link.) Eventually, for a little comedy, I'll try to coordinate
monster chats for people who are into talking about serious guitar
stuff, or whatever floats people's boat. (I might even get some
guests involved.) But for now, it'll just be a free-form
thingie.

TRIBUTES:
I FINALLY
added a tribute to the great Brian Wilson (my
all-time biggest, most enduring musical inspiration) to
the TRIBUTES page of this
site. This tribute includes loads of my own personal experiences,
growing up a Beach Boys worshipper, as well as TONS of links to
must-have Brian Wilson/Beach Boys-related books, videos, and CD
collections. I also posted a bunch of my favorite Beach Boys/SMiLE
links at the bottom of that page.
But
the COOLEST thing? I've just obtained permission from the publisher
of Bassics
magazine to post An
Interview I was Fortunate Enough to Conduct with the Man Himself
on this site!!!!! The
interview, which was also conducted with legendary studio bassist
Carol Kaye
(who played electric bass on many of the Beach Boys studio
era hits), hit the rack as Bassics' June/July
2000 issue. That issue, which includes loads of interesting
vintage photos of Brian, as well as shots taken with Brian and Carol
Kaye at the time of the interview, is still available through Bassics'
website as a back issue. The vast majority of the feature focuses
on Pet Soundsspecifically Brian's revolutionary use
of bass during that era.
I reckon you'll dig it!!!

tradition of embarassing myself in cyberspace, I just added evidence

PSYCHO
LICKS:
Some folks 'round
here might remember that the very first Psycho Lick
uploaded to this site was something I salvaged from an old tape
(June 1995; refer to Psycho Lick
#1), recorded while I was practicing over an Infetious Grooves
song in preparation for an audition with them (more details about
that experience can be found HERE).
For fun, I'm adding another lick from this eraa pretty speedy
legato phrase (Psycho Lick #20).
It's a fun example of alternating between two adjacent three-notes-per-string
fingerings, moving the same sequence to lower adjacent strings.
Check it out!
WHO
D.A.T.? (Photo Gallery):
For fun, I just
added a PHOTO GALLERY section
to the Who D.A.T.? page. Threw down some
photos taken at the NAMM Show back in January 2002
(as well as shots from older shows), some Party pix,
funny Miscellaneous photos, Old PR pictures
from a photo shoot I did in May 1996, as well as some Old
Gig photos. Time marches on...
Hope you get a laugh outta some of 'em!

RECORDINGS
(Dale Boots):
Earlier
this month, I added a Dale
Boots page to the RECORDINGS
area of this site. There, you'll find some ultra-raw, live recordings
of me trying to play acoustic guitar and sing simultaneously. The
most recent addition is a version of Clapton's Change
the World, recorded live in August, 1997. The audio comes
from a video camera, which briefly shuts down in the middle of the
first verse. Also, at the beginning of the second verse (if you
check it out), the backbeat you'll hear is me stomping
my foot on a tambourine. Tricky!

PSYCHO
LICKS:
As you may have
noticed in the above paragraph, the current issue of GuitarOne
features a MONSTER lesson on the art of fingertapping, conducted
by li'l ol' me! Well... Oftentimes when I go about creating materials
for in-depth G1 lessons, I come up with more stuff than I
can use. So... Fer
yer tappin' pleasure, I slapped a pretty sizeable wad of semi-insane
tapping outtakes from the above G1 lesson on
the PSYCHO LICKS page. There, you'll
find everything from a plethora of pick taps and scary
tapped scale sequences, to demented diminished tapping
licks and hellacious whole-tone multi-finger tapping lines.
Enjoy!
LINKS:
Amazing
as it may sound, I added yet another massive wad of links to the
LINKS page over the last couple weeks.
All of the ones listed below are pretty darned spiffy guitar sites
(instructional, artist-related, etc.):
FYI,
by clicking on the links to Top
Guitar Sites, Guitar
Tricks, and/or Guitar
Secrets, my site gets an increased ranking on THEIR link pages,
thus (theoretically) helping increase traffic to MY site. So....
If you like any of the stuff I'm doing here, pleeeeeeeease help
spread the word by checking out the above links. Mind you, I wouldn't
have added links to the aforementioned sites in the first place,
if they weren't all jackpots of guitar-related info! No obligation,
obviously...
Oh
yeah! I also added a few links to friends' sites (Erik Halbig, Paul
Nelson, Lenny Widegren, Alyssa Ruschak, etc.) on the DALE'S
PICKIN' PALS page.
THE
AFTERMATH:
Not
that I'm a fan of beating dead horsies, but... A few days ago I
was giving a friend a little tutorial on how to do certain
mixing/bouncing things on my MOTU-based recording system. As a Guinea
pig, I used The Aftermath, yanking out a bunch of stuff
from the original mix, creating a mellower, organic mix. Whereas
the original version of this tune features a spoken primary vocal,
two acoustic gtrs., marimba, piano, backing vox, two electric gtrs.,
distorted bass, detuned kick drum and ride cymbal, the alternate
mix I created for the aforementioned tutorial featured
only backing vox,
marimba, piano, and acoustic guitars. For fun, I decided to keep
it and upload it on this site. If you check it out, you might hear
something you didn't notice before, or you might not... :)
Here 'tis: TheAftermath(AltMix1).mp3
And actually,
now that I think of it, if anybody out there is interested in listening
to how some people go about track building, the three
MP3s that I've now uploaded on this site kind of chronicle the evolution
of this tune, as far as its instrumentation/scope goes. If you feel
like humoring me, crank up your computer and check out these three
MP3s, in the following order:
- The
Aftermath(IsoAcous).mp3
(ACOUSTIC GTR. ONLY
Mix)
- TheAftermath(AltMix1).mp3
(ORGANIC INSTRUMENTATION Mix)
- TheAftermath©DaleTurner.mp3
(FULL STEREO Mix)
AUDIO
UPLOAD:
Congrats to Roy
Marx, the first individual to successfully upload a tune on
Intimate Audio's AUDIO UPLOAD page!
For the curious, the song Roy uploaded is called No
Strings Attached, and it's one of nine tracks featured
on his brand new disc, Live
Among Friends (recorded live at the Crooked Bar in Hollyweird,
9 February, 2002). In the artist's own words, the aforementioned
song examines what happens when coming to the crossroads of
a relationship and the other person lets you go. Answer? You
fall! But before I elaborate any further on the recording,
let me throw down a little background on the dood, as well as some
of my personal perspective...
Roy Marx, a former
resident of De Kalb, Illinois and current Los Angeles inhabitant,
could be referred to as an Alternative Folkiea
singer/songwriter who delivers rock-edged tunes predominantly on
an acoustic axe, if you will. I first became aware of Roy when he
enrolled at Musician's Institute last October and wound up in my
music theory and ear training classes. Shortly thereafter, he began
attending my Open Counseling (which focuses on guitar for
the vocalist), where I was able to get a clearer picture of
where his real interests lie: He's a freakin' songwriting machine!
Show this cat a couple kooky chord voicings, he'll put his personal
stamp on 'em, then come back with a full-length song (replete with
a hell of a lot more chords of his own) in no time flat! Pretty
cool growth period for this guy, I reckon.
In a nutshell,
here's what I like about Roy's disc, Live
Among Friends:
One of my all-time
pet-peeves, when it comes to seeing/hearing singer/songwriters perform
live, is having to suffer through an abundance of tunes based on
rehashed chord changes and repetitive accompaniment approaches (e.g.,
the same strumming rhythm). Well, with Roy's live set, you get none
of that. Varied rhythm patterns, clever chord work, interesting
progressions, and variations in meter (3/4, 4/4, 6/8, and combinations
thereof) abound! And none of the melodies are ultra-predictable
toss-offs. Also, he addresses a diversity of topics with his lyrics
(check 'em out on his site),
as opposed to providing nine different slants on the same ol' thang.
And, though occasionally the vocals get a littly pitchy (it is live,
after alland that, in no way, is a criticism of the cool songs
themselves), overall, the 35 minutes worth of tunes on this disc
is WELL worth the measley sum he's making it available for ($6.50,
which includes shipping). I should also add that he created
all the artwork for his CD, screened the discs, printed the CD inserts
(on glossy card-stock), and assembled the package himself. DAMN
impressive DIY job. Way to go, bro!
AUDIO
UPLOAD (Addendum):
Since
lots of people appear to be having problems playing back
audio files that reside in the /pub folder of my FTP
server (when attempting to access the files through their web's
browseri.e., ftp://www.intimateaudio.com/pub),
I've posted a separate link to the uploaded songs on this page.
This new section is called HEAR HERE!, and it
appears on the left-hand side of the AUDIO
UPLOAD page (just below the links). There, you can click on
the song's title (to hear the tune), or click on the artist's name
(to go directly to his/her site).
NOTE:
I've experienced NO problems accessing the files in the /pub
folder through an FTP program though (I've tried it on numerous
computers). Just use your FTP program to get into the /pub
folder, select an audio file, click GET (or Download,
whichever applies), and transfer the file directly to your hard
drive. You should have no problems playing it from there.
I've
also added a new REVIEWS
feature to the Audio Upload concept. Every couple weeks
or so, depending on how many songs reside in the /pub
folder, I'll single out one song/artist and publish a REVIEW
of their work on this site. The review will include
a link to the artist's site, as well as a plug for whatever
independently-produced CD their uploaded song came from (if applicable),
among other forms of kudos that come to me!
After
some time, if you don't get chosen as a review candidate, please
don't take it personally! It most likely only means that, in my
view, your recording falls outside the category I describe as INTIMATE
AUDIO (refer to this site's HOME page).
RECORDINGS
(Dale Boots):
K.
This is kinda weak, but wtf? For fun, I opted to add a Daleboots
section to the RECORDINGS page. Every
now and then, I'll throw down an ultra-raw live version of something
that features me playing acoustic guitar and singing simultaneously.
This first one is The
Man That Got Away, recorded live at Los Angeles City College.
(I've been trying to add jazzier tunes to my wannabe
solo act repertoire; this is one of 'em.). The MP3 includes a spoken
intro, explaining certain things about the song. Overall, the thing's
not totally horrible (ragging on self: some pitchiness, chordal
clams, and faltering voice). And I did manage to remember the words
and keep it pretty pockety. I reckon I was a little
nervous?? I did eventually manage to start yodeling somewhat normally
by the very end though. Also, there was only one mic capturing both
the acoustic guitar and my voice, so the guitar's kinda hard to
hear. Anyways... These things will be strictly for entertainment
purposes only!!! I'll add some other stuff (new and old) to this
Daleboots page from time to time. Enjoy!

Fer yer pickin'

written in standard notation/TAB and are accompanied by MP3s demonstrating
the licks at regular and half speeds.

NEWS/UPDATES:
- LINKS
Page Updated!!
- New
PSYCHO LICK!!
- New
Addition to RECORDINGS Page...
LINKS:
I just severly
overhauled the LINKS page of this site.
For starters,
I added a link to two new sites: www.guitarsite.com,
and www.musicroom.com.
Based on their respective URLs, these site's contents are pretty
self-explanatoryyou'll find a zillion links to guitar-related
sites on GuitarSite.com, for instance. However, in
the case of MusicRoom.com, I'll give you the direct
dirt: They're a big internet-based music books vendor in the UK/EU.
They even carry some of my books!! I found their site, and noticed
that they had an affiliate program. Needless to say,
I joined. This means that, for every visitor from my site that travels
to theirs and purchases a book, I get a teeny percentage. That's
not bad, considering I already get a small royalty from two of the
books they're selling! I figured, What the heck? Got nothin'
to lose... Mind you, I'm not asking anybody to
go there and buy anything, I'm just letting my UK/EU brothers and
sisters know that, IF they bought a book there, they'd be helping
me out in a way they might not otherwise know.
But the HUGE addition
to the LINKS page comes in the form of the Dale's
Pickin' Pals page I added. There you'll find links to a bunch
of my guitar-playing pals' sites, as well as a brief description
of their musical style, specialty, etc. If I left you out, please
let me know! I only did, 'cause I didn't know you had a site up
and running! And if you ARE up there, and you hate what I wrote
about you, you know where to send the hate mail...
DTurnstyle@aol.com
PSYCHO
LICKS:
I added a new
lick to the PSYCHO LICKS page. Okay,
so it's probably lame of me to only add ONE new lick, but... I reckon
it's sort of a cool one!? Wanna take a crack at a nice, spiraling
pattern in E Dorian, which uses lots of string-skipping, hammer-ons/pull-offs,
and position shifts? I thought you did! After the NAMM (National
Association of Music Merchants) show, I'll put more stuff up....
Maybe even some fun photos/stories!?
RECORDINGS:
Feeling the need
to promote my own arse for whatever reason (at least I admit it!),
I've slapped a couple audio snippets from one of my instructional
booksSka Guitarup
on the RECORDINGS page. I feel kinda
guilty, 'cause it's not really a new recording (did
it in March 1999), but it is a little ditty I wrote for that book.
(There are about 56 little Dale-composed ditties on
that book's accompanying CD.) Even though it's kind of a semi-cheeseball
tune, some people might get a kick out of the harmonized horns,
different rhythmic pockets I worked within, and counterpoint going
on, while staying within a ska context.
In the next month
or so, I WILL have a new recording up on here. It'll be a crazy,
all-acoustic covers CD I recorded live back in December
2000. It has 10 tunes on it, all with me yodeling my brains out.
Some of them are funny as hell, at least in my (and my friends')
opinion. There are also some mellow ones, where I'm trying to actually
sing. When the time comes, I'll have MP3s for the funniest/coolest
bits splattered all over this site, as well as full details of what
my arranging/interpretive battle plan was for each song.
Oh yeah: I should also add that all of the songs I covered are from
the '60s-'70s.
Thanks for checking
back. It DOES mean a lot to me!!!!!!
