LIVE DALE BOOTS!!

Here's a little page where you can check out some ULTRA-RAW live recordings of your silly site host, yodeling and strummin'. Mind you, none of these performances are “great,” they're merely experiments—your site host testing out some new, atypical numbers (acoustic guitar & vocals) in front of real human beings. Please don't condemn him for the occasional “sluffed” chord or his sometimes out-of-tune tenor! Consider this section for entertainment purposes only!

  • SONG? “Bohemian Rhapsody” (Freddie Mercury)
  • WHERE? Live @ Los Angeles City College
  • WHEN? May 2004
  • SIGNIFICANCE? Those of you who've picked up a copy of INTERPRETATIONS have no doubt laughed yourselves silly listening to my crazy one-man rendition of "Bohemian Rhapsody," played in its entirety. Well, for the first time in a loooooooooong time, a few days ago, I performed the tune live in front of some folks (purely acoustic‚ no mic or anything). Due to time constraints, I was originally only going to play part of it. The crowd, however, encouraged me to do otherwise! (I did about four minutes' worth; my full rendition is over six minutes long.) For the purest of comedic insanity, I (hopefully) will have a video of me playing this tune shortly, taped from an upcoming gig. It will surely change your life forever! (*giggle*) (*snort*) (*chortle*) Okay, maybe not...
  • MISC. DETAILS? Acoustic guitar & vocal, live, in a very small room with no microphone used at all. Pure acoustic performance, recorded to mini-disc. Tuned down 1/2 step.
  • CLAM QUOTIENT? Most clams are drowned out by the crowd singing along :)
  • TOTAL PLAYING TIME: 4:25

  • SONG? “September Song” (K. Weill)
  • WHERE? Live @ Los Angeles City College
  • WHEN? May 2004
  • SIGNIFICANCE? I heard Willie Nelson's version a million times when I was growing up, but totally forgot how great it was till I heard it played at the Elliott Smith Memorial concert in Los Angeles. (They played a bunch of Elliott's old records through the theater's P.A., which RULED!) I figured I'd try to create my own version of it—replete w/odd throat-humming solo!
  • MISC. DETAILS? Acoustic guitar & vocal, live, in a very small room with no microphone used at all. Pure acoustic performance, recorded to mini-disc.
  • CLAM QUOTIENT? I ran out of fingers and toes... Actually, my right leg was asleep half the time (I was standing), which made things interesting!
  • TOTAL PLAYING TIME: 3:29

  • SONG? “Cry Me a River” (A. Hamilton)
  • WHERE? Live @ Los Angeles City College
  • WHEN? 5 May, 2004
  • SIGNIFICANCE? Cinco de Mayo!!
  • MISC. DETAILS? Acoustic guitar & vocal (one mic capturing all, running through PA w/no monitors). Audience recording w/mini-disc.
  • CLAM QUOTIENT? Not horrible, but I wish it was easier to hear the geetar, 'cause I think I played some cool stuff...
  • TOTAL PLAYING TIME: 3:34

  • SONG? “Moon River” (H. Mancini)
  • WHERE? Live @ Los Angeles City College
  • WHEN? 5 May, 2004
  • SIGNIFICANCE? Cinco de Mayo!!
  • MISC. DETAILS? Acoustic guitar & vocal (one mic capturing all, running through PA w/no monitors). Audience recording w/mini-disc. Tuned down one whole step.
  • CLAM QUOTIENT? I HATE the way I ended this.... I should've not tweaked the progression in the way that I did. Oh well... The little guitar intro and interlude is cool though!
  • TOTAL PLAYING TIME: 2:30

BONUS: VERY lo-fi version of me doing Ours' (Jimmy Gnecco's band) “Dizzy”
(Un-mic'ed live performance on 17 December, 2003. Mostly crappy but wtf?)
  • SONG? “Moodswing Whiskey” (Jeff Buckley)
  • WHERE? Live @ Los Angeles City College
  • WHEN? 22 October, 2003
  • SIGNIFICANCE? The morning of October 22, 2003 it was announced that the great Elliott Smith had committed suicide the previous day. On the evening of October 22, 2003 a number of musicians (Flaming Lips, the Strokes, and others) at venues in the U.S. and abroad performed songs dedicated to the late singer-songwriter. In my own lo-fi way, I guess I was among them...
  • That same night, I attempted to pay tribute to the man myself. Since this whole site is about “Intimate Audio,” I figured I'd share... I not only “lose it” a little in my SPOKEN INTRO, but choke up during the song's falsetto midpoint. Didn't expect it, but given how totally upset I was that morning, I guess it's understandable.

  • Anyways, in honor of the man, I played “Moodswing Whiskey” that night. I hadn't tried doing that song in a long time, and actually was slated to play something else, but I felt pretty compelled to give this one a go. Keep your ears peeled for some impromptu modified lyrics (e.g., “Singin' an Elliott Smith melody, with a drink in my right hand...”), obviously in homage.
  • MISC. DETAILS? Acoustic guitar & vocal (one mic capturing both, running through PA w/no monitors). Audience recording w/mini-disc.
  • CLAM QUOTIENT? Besides the point, as far as this one's concerned...
  • TOTAL PLAYING TIME: 5:23

BONUS: VERY lo-fi version of me doing Elliott Smith's “Angeles”
(From a live performance on 3 December, 2003)
  • SONG? “Detour Ahead” (L. Carter/H. Ellis/J. Frigo)
  • WHERE? Live @ Los Angeles City College
  • WHEN? 28 May, 2003
  • SIGNIFICANCE? A great (though not-so-well-known) jazz song, performed back in the day by Ella Fitzgerald and Herb Ellis, that a friend of mine recently turned me on to. Oddly enough, after thinking I'd never heard it before, I discovered I did have an instrumental version of it on the great, live Bill Evans album, Waltz for Debby! I figured I'd give it a whirl...
  • MISC. DETAILS? Acoustic guitar & vocal, live, in a very small room with no microphone used at all. Pure acoustic performance, recorded to mini-disc. FYI, I played the whole thing by brushing the strings with my thumb, instead of strumming with a pick or pluckin' fingerstyle.
  • CLAM QUOTIENT? My voice bugs me for most of it (sound quality), possibly the result of they key I played it in. (Or not being able to “work” a mic?) Should've tried transposing it up a tad first, but wtf? Some of the chord work's kinda cool though :)
  • TOTAL PLAYING TIME: 2:43

  • SONG? “Stray Cat Strut” (B. Setzer)
  • WHERE? Live @ Los Angeles City College
  • WHEN? 30 April, 2003
  • SIGNIFICANCE? I wanted to try a song that had ample space to try “scat singing” in it (while still strumming my geetar).
  • MISC. DETAILS? Acoustic guitar & vocal (one mic capturing all, running through PA w/no monitors). Audience recording w/mini-disc. There are two little “scat solos” in this one. Both are 100% off-the-cuff, as you can probably tell! The second one is the best (and funniest). At least check that part out [1:39-2:09]!
  • CLAM QUOTIENT? Couple chord clams, but not bad. The song's in a lower range than most on this page, so it was a lot easier to sing (e.g., no falsetto factor).
  • TOTAL PLAYING TIME: 2:59

  • SONG? “Unchained Melody” (H. Zaret/A. North)
  • WHERE? Live @ Los Angeles City College
  • WHEN? March 2003
  • SIGNIFICANCE? I was inspired to give this tune a try after hearing bootlegs of the Ours' Jimmy Gnecco kick arse on it, acoustic guitar/vocal-style.
  • MISC. DETAILS? Acoustic guitar & vocal, w/piano entering towards end (one mic capturing all, running through PA w/no monitors). Audience recording w/mini-disc. I start the tune in the key of “B,” with a Capo at the 4th fret, then tear it off for the last 30% of the tune to play in “C” (transposed up 1/2 step for faux drama!)
  • CLAM QUOTIENT? All clams aside (first note blows), the biggest problem is the fact that, over the course of the evening, my guitar slowly drifted into “flat” territory. Not totally obvious—until the piano enters near the middle and we're playing the same chords! Egadz...Oh yeah, the (quiet) laughter you hear in the audience at the very end of this song is due to a stupid face I made while singing the very last note. I don't have a clue why I did that...
  • TOTAL PLAYING TIME: 3:23

  • SONG? “Killer Queen” (Freddie Mercury)
  • WHERE? Live @ Los Angeles City College
  • WHEN? March 2003
  • SIGNIFICANCE? Freddie Mercury is king! About three years ago, I recorded a pretty funny version of me doing “Bohemian Rhapsody,” pro-quality, all live in my home studio (for a CD I've still yet to release). This is another Queen tune I just started trying to do.
  • MISC. DETAILS? Acoustic guitar & vocal (one mic capturing both, running through PA w/no monitors). At the very least, you GOTTA hang around till this song's midpoint to hear what the heck I try to do to “approximate” Brian May's guitar solo, live!! Audience recording w/mini-disc.
  • CLAM QUOTIENT? Started it off waaaaay too freakin' slow, but hung with it till close to the end. Vocal quality really bugs me in the early stages, but wtf? Lots of chordal clams, which prompted me to botch a few vocal lines...
  • TOTAL PLAYING TIME: 3:18

  • SONG? “Morning Theft” (Jeff Buckley)
  • WHERE? Live @ Los Angeles City College
  • WHEN? 18 December, 2002
  • SIGNIFICANCE? The Christmas spirit got to me, so I figured I'd attempt one of my favorite Jeff Buckley songs in front of some warm bodies.
  • MISC. DETAILS? Acoustic guitar & vocal (one mic capturing both, running through PA w/no monitors). Audience recording w/mini-disc.
  • CLAM QUOTIENT? Not bad, considering my tendinitis had been acting up worse than usual and I hadn't touched a guitar in a week.
  • TOTAL PLAYING TIME: 3:31

  • SONG? “Blue Eyes ” (E. John/G. Osborne)
  • WHERE? Live @ Los Angeles City College
  • WHEN? 25 September, 2002
  • MISC. DETAILS? This is only the outro chorus of the song (the last minute's worth). My mini-disc player died midway through (the whole 1st half SUCKED anyway...couldn't hear myself AT ALL), so I'm using my girlfriend's mono cassette version (stereo-ized after the fact) for this little excerpt. Lots of tape jitter, but wtf? Acoustic guitar (w/capo@1st fret) & vocal (one mic capturing both, running through PA w/no monitors). Hopefully I can get a better, complete version of it recorded soon, 'cause I think the chords I was using are kinda cool...
  • CLAM QUOTIENT? Most of the huge clams are nuked from this one, due to the reasons given above.
  • TOTAL PLAYING TIME: 1:00

  • SONG? “Twisted” (W. Gray/A. Ross)
  • WHERE? Live @ Los Angeles City College
  • WHEN? 29 May, 2002
  • SIGNIFICANCE? This song was recorded live on the 5th anniversary of Jeff Buckley's passing. You can hear me dedicate the song to him (and explain the tune's origins) in SPOKEN INTRO (Part 1), then my ad-lib, goofball setup of the song in SPOKEN INTRO (Part 2).
  • MISC. DETAILS? Acoustic guitar & vocal (one mic capturing both, running through PA w/no monitors). Audience recording w/mini-disc.
  • CLAM QUOTIENT? I f*cked my guitar part up about THREE THOUSAND TIMES!!! But what can ya do?? Also, my voice gets better at around “They say as a child...”
  • TOTAL PLAYING TIME: 2:33

<<<<BACK TO RECORDINGS PAGE

  • SONG? “The Man That Got Away” (H. Arlen/I. Gershwin)
  • WHERE? Live @ Los Angeles City College
  • WHEN? 27 February, 2002
  • MISC. DETAILS? Acoustic guitar & vocal (one mic capturing both, running through PA w/no monitors). Audience recording w/mini-disc.
  • EXCUSES? I was nervous a bit. By the end, I sorta start to sound alright—just in time for the tune to be over! Gave a SPOKEN INTRO for the tune, which was kinda cool.
  • TOTAL PLAYING TIME: 3:14

<<<<BACK TO RECORDINGS PAGE

  • SONG? “Change the World” (Sims/Kennedy/Kirkpatrick)
  • WHERE? Wedding, Live @ ????? Church
  • WHEN? 30 August, 1997
  • MISC. DETAILS? Acoustic guitar & vocal (and tambourine, with my foot!) The audio is from a video camera (VHS tape), and no sound reinforcement was used. Audio cuts out for a couple seconds during the first verse (the dude shut off the video camera). The “guitar solo” (at the song's midpoint) is pretty cool though. Keep your ears peeled for the priest's spooky voice at the end!
  • CLAM QUOTIENT? I botch the lyrics to the chorus darned near every time!
  • TOTAL PLAYING TIME: 3:40

<<<<BACK TO RECORDINGS PAGE

  • SONG? “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” (E. John/T. Rice)
  • WHERE? Wedding, Live @ ????? Church
  • WHEN? 18 March, 1995
  • MISC. DETAILS? Clean-tone electric & vocal. The audio is from a video camera (VHS tape). I reckon that was my Tom Anderson Strat, played through a Kendrick amplifier w/slight delay? Also, I was yodelin' through a PA.
  • CLAM QUOTIENT? The occasional chord clam! Also, I think my voice sounds kinda weird 'cause I was trying to sing like Elton John! I did a pretty cool "echo repeat" delay thing at the end though... Alas, I messed up a bit trying to fade it out with my volume pedal (*sniffle*).
  • TOTAL PLAYING TIME: 4:01
